Hypogonadism refers to a condition in which the body doesn't produce enough testosterone. This can occur due to a problem with the testes or with the pituitary gland that controls the testes. Some key facts about hypogonadism:
- It results from lower levels of sex hormones, mainly testosterone in males. Low testosterone levels can cause issues like low sex drive, erectile dysfunction, and mood changes.
- There are two main types:
- Primary hypogonadism originates from a problem in the testes with testosterone production. This could be due to injury, infection, Klinefelter syndrome, or other disorders affecting the testes.
- Secondary hypogonadism originates from a problem with the pituitary gland or hypothalamus in the brain. These glands signal the testes to produce testosterone, so if signaling is disrupted, testosterone levels drop.
- Diagnosis involves blood tests to measure hormone levels and evaluate symptoms. If levels are abnormally low, imaging tests may be done to identify the cause.
- Treatment options include testosterone replacement therapy via injections, gels, patches or pellets to reach normal levels. Improving diet, exercise, sleep and managing other health conditions may also help.
